What Are Cardboard Boxes?

In the trade it refers to one of three material families: corrugated board, folding boxboard (paperboard), and rigid chipboard. All three start as pulp pressed into sheets, but they differ in thickness, layer structure, and how much weight they can take.
Strength is measured by grade. Corrugated is rated by Edge Crush Test values like 32 ECT or 44 ECT and burst ratings like 200# or 275#. Paperboard and chipboard are rated by caliper (thickness in points, where 1 pt = 0.001 inch) and basis weight. Picking the right grade is the biggest factor in whether a box protects your product or fails in transit.
